Painting to Sell Your Home

June 6, 2018

Thinking about selling your home?  Definitely plan to paint!  Painting your home is the least expensive way to freshen up your place, making it look move-in ready, and suitable for a brand new owner.

You may not know that the colors you choose can increase the selling price of your home.  We know that curb appeal matters.  But who knew that home exteriors painted the color "greige" (light grey and beige blend) tend to sell for more than tan homes or brown homes?

Also consider the front door.  Painting it charcoal, dark gray or navy blue heightens the appeal of your home to potential sellers.  And of course, it looks nice with the "greige".

While we're thinking about the outdoors, consider power washing anything that can benefit from a good cleaning.  The shady side of the house and roof, the deck and patio, pavers around the pool, outdoor furniture and storage bins all need to show the same loving care as the interior of your home.  If the deck or patio are looking faded, get the deck re-stained and the patio freshly painted in a neutral, nature-based shade.

Once you're inside, people prefer living spaces in cool, calm tones (link to blog about warm & cool colors).  If you're planning a kitchen remodel, blue kitchen cabinets are trending right now, and those fall right within this selling strategy.  If you're refreshing with paint, cool, crisp white paired with light blues and grays will increase buyers' interest in your kitchen.

Dining room and living room sell best in neutral colors.  These spaces should be calming, and also feel homey and welcoming.   The color palette can be warm or cool, but lighter tones are better: try beige, taupe, gray-blue or slate.

The bathroom is important to buyers, and color can update the room, without the expense of fixtures and tile.  Blues and grey-violet are of the moment.  If it will work with your current decor, change the paint, get some new towels and watch your bathroom shine!

Buyers want bedrooms to be soothing.  Essentially, they will pay more for a room they can envision getting a good night's sleep in.  These paint tones should be cool, light blues and grey-violet.

Integrate these economical tips to increase your home value with strategic, and beautiful paint choices.  Or, paint your home...and love it so much you decide to stay.  Your choice!
